Giving Teeth the Exposure They Need
Gummy smiles can make it difficult to get the restorative dental care you need as well as feel good about your appearance. With crown lengthening in Brandon, Dr. Wehrkamp and Dr. Heesch can eliminate excess gum tissue to expose more tooth enamel, making it easier for crowns and other dental restorations to be put into place. This removal process also helps to create a more even gumline, helping smiles to look and feel their best. How Crown Lengthening Works
Many people with excess gum display are unhappy with their smile but unaware of the treatment options available. Teeth in these situations often appear short or stubby as long as they are wide. There are basically four conditions where excess gum tissue is present:
- Altered Passive Eruption
- Short or Hyperactive Upper Lip
- Dental Alveolar Extrusion
- Vertical Maxillary Excess
- Combinations of the Above
There isn’t a predictable procedure for the short or hyperactive lip. Botox can help the hyperactive lip, but the effects are not predictable nor are they permanent. Dental alveolar extrusion and vertical maxillary excess can be treated but involve orthodontists and/or oral surgeons for correction.
The good news is the majority of these cases are due to altered passive eruption. This condition develops from teeth erupting into a normal position, but abnormal bone and tissue cover the teeth. Drs. Scott Wehrkamp and Mauri Heesch can differentiate and diagnose what is causing your gummy smile. What you may not know is that beneath that overgrown soft tissue, your teeth are just waiting to be revealed.
This simple cosmetic dentistry procedure can be performed in our office, often in one visit. We’ll talk with you about your options, what to expect during the procedure, and the outcome you want to achieve.
