Fluoride is seen as highly important when it comes to maintaining strong, healthy teeth. But while you may not have any problems using fluoride-based oral hygiene products, you may be wondering whether they’re safe for your child. To help you make the best decision for your little one’s smile, your dentist is here to explain the importance of fluoride and when’s the best time to make it a regular part of your child’s oral hygiene routine.
Why is Fluoride So Important When It Comes to Oral Health?
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that can significantly lower an individual’s risk of developing cavities. It can help strengthen the enamel, thus improving its resistance against the bacteria-produced acids that cause decay. Additionally, it can reverse the earliest stages of decay by remineralizing the teeth. Due to its effectiveness in maintaining healthy smiles, fluoride is commonly found in toothpaste and mouth rinse.
Is Fluoride Safe for Children?
In 2022, a study published by the Journal of Dental Research found that there was no link between fluoride exposure at a young age and issues with development during childhood. Comparing the cases of children who received fluoride between the ages of 5 and 10 with those who didn’t, it was found that the measures of emotional and behavioral development were similar between the two groups.
It should be noted that children who receive too much fluoride may be at risk for fluorosis, a condition where white spots appear on the teeth. However, this is a purely cosmetic issue.
When Can You Start Giving Your Child Fluoride?
Once your child’s first teeth erupt, you can start brushing them with fluoride-based toothpaste. To prevent your little one from ingesting too much, you should only use a tiny amount; a smear the size of a grain of rice should be enough to do the job.
As your child grows older and develops the ability to spit, you can start using a pea-sized amount of toothpaste in order to clean their smile. Be sure to remind them to spit in the sink once brushing is done.
Are you still uncertain whether now is the right time to introduce your child to fluoride? You should reach out to your dentist to see what they recommend; they’ll be able to help you make the right decisions for keeping your child’s smile safe while they’re still growing.
